According to TastOfCountry.com, Toby Keith was signed to Mercury but later asked to be let go because they would not release his “How Do You Like Me Now?!” single and the album that went with it.

Rather than accepting this he decided to buy it from Mercury in 1999 and took it to DreamWorks. Well turns out, they didn’t like it either. He released the single “When Love Fades” from the same album and asked for the album to get another chance.

“How Do You Like Me Now?!” would end up being number one on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs chart for five weeks in March of 2000! It was also the first number one single for DreamWorks Nashville label.
